"There are currently 14 operational dual-control TF-51 Mustangs in the world. I've had the opportunity to shoot three of them. The TFs are used for indoctrination and training. Stallion 51 Corporation owns and operates Crazy Horse and manages Mad Max. Both airplanes began their lives as P-51Ds and were later converted to North American standards.

Kentucky Babe is owned and usually flown by Dick Thurman. For this photo session, Dick flew his P-40 Warhawk, and Lee Lauderback of Stallion 51 flew Kentucky Babe with Angela West in the copilot's position. These shots were taken off the Gulf coast of Florida. When I put the planes in orbits or formation 360-degree turns, I usually place the subject planes on the outside of the turn to see "down" on the airplanes. However, I do like the "power shot" I get when they're on the inside of the turn. Placing them slightly high, and turning the camera as I wish, I can add a diagonal element to the image and more movement to a still photo. Sometimes I put on a wide-angle lens to show more scenery and use some poetic license in stretching the subject."
